Trichome Color Guide
The trichomes tell you exactly when to harvest and what the high will feel like. Adjust the sliders to match what you see under your loupe.
Too early. THC hasn't fully developed. Trichome heads are still filling with cannabinoids. Harvesting now means lower potency and airy, underdeveloped buds. Wait at least 1–2 more weeks.

Energetic, cerebral, uplifting. Peak THC with minimal CBN conversion. The most psychoactive and stimulating harvest window. Best for daytime use, creativity, and social settings. Some find this window more anxiety-inducing.

Balanced head + body. Maximum potency. This is where most growers chop. Full THC development with just enough CBN for body relaxation. The most well-rounded and versatile effect profile. This is the sweet spot.

Heavy body high, sedative, couch lock. THC is degrading into CBN (the sleepy cannabinoid). Less cerebral, more physical. Best for evening use, pain relief, and sleep. Reduced overall "high" potency but stronger body effects.

Too late for most growers. Significant THC degradation. Very heavy, narcotic, sleepy effect with reduced psychoactivity. Some growers intentionally harvest here for sleep/anxiety strains, but potency is notably lower.

🔬 What You Need to Check Trichomes
Jeweler's loupe (60x–100x) — $8–15. The minimum. Hold it right against the bud and look through. Takes practice but works. Get one with a built-in LED light.
Digital USB microscope — $20–40. Plugs into your phone. Much easier to see and photograph. You can zoom in live and even record. Best value option.
Check the BUDS, not the sugar leaves. Sugar leaves amber faster than buds. If you check leaves, you'll harvest too early. Always inspect trichomes on the bud calyx (the swollen part where pistils emerge).
Check multiple buds. Top colas ripen faster than lowers. Check 3–5 buds from different heights. Harvest based on the average, not the most mature bud.
💡 Key Principles
Clear → Milky = THC developing. This is the plant building potency. You want to see this transition complete before harvesting.
Milky → Amber = THC degrading to CBN. CBN is sedative and less psychoactive. More amber = more body/sleepy, less head high.
The "right" time depends on YOU. Want energy? Harvest with less amber. Want sleep aid? Let more amber develop. There's no single "correct" answer.
Trichomes can change fast in the last week. Check every other day once you see 10%+ amber. Things can go from perfect to overripe in 3–4 days.
If you're flushing, start your flush 1–2 weeks before your target harvest date. Account for those days when timing your trichome checks.
