π§ Troubleshooting β Seed Won't Pop
Seed hasn't cracked after 48 hours
Cause: Shell too hard, temperature too low, or seed not viable.
Fix: Lightly scuff the seed with fine sandpaper (200+ grit) to thin the shell. Soak in water for 12β24 hours. Ensure temp is 75β80Β°F. If nothing after 7 days, the seed may be dead.
Taproot emerged but seedling won't break surface
Cause: Planted too deep, soil too compacted, or seed helmet stuck.
Fix: Plant only ΒΌβΒ½ inch deep. Gently loosen the soil surface. If the seed shell is stuck on the cotyledon ("helmet head"), mist it and gently remove with tweezers after softening for 20 min. Never force it dry.
Seedling is tall and stretchy (leggy)
Cause: Light too far away or too weak.
Fix: Move light closer (6β12 inches for LED seedling lights). Bury the stem up to the cotyledons at first transplant. Add a small fan for stem strengthening.
Seedling damped off (fell over, thin stem at soil line)
Cause: Overwatering + poor airflow = fungal infection at the base.
Fix: Unfortunately usually fatal. Prevention: Use spray bottle only, don't soak soil, ensure airflow, use sterile medium, remove humidity dome after first true leaves appear.
π‘οΈ Universal Germination Rules
Temperature is everything. Seeds germinate best at 75β80Β°F (24β27Β°C). Below 70Β°F, germination slows dramatically. Above 85Β°F, you risk cooking the seed. Use a seedling heat mat ($15) if your space is cool.
Moisture, not drowning. Seeds need consistent moisture to trigger germination. Too dry = the shell never cracks. Too wet = the seed rots. Think "damp sponge" not "puddle."
Darkness until sprouted. Seeds germinate in the dark (they're underground in nature). Once the taproot emerges and you plant it, turn on lights at low intensity.
Handle with care. The taproot is fragile. Use tweezers, not fingers. If you break it, the seed is done.
Taproot goes DOWN. When planting a germinated seed, the white root tip points downward. If planted upside down, the seedling wastes energy correcting itself.
