Drying Room SOP

The dry is where 50% of your quality is made or lost. Rush it = hay smell. Nail it = smooth, terpy flower. Follow this day-by-day.

⚠️ THE #1 MISTAKE: Drying too fast. If your buds are crispy in 3-4 days, it was too hot, too dry, or too much airflow. Target 10-14 days for a perfect dry.

1
Prep Your Drying Space
Before you chop
Clean the room/tent — wipe surfaces, no dust or debris
Hang drying lines or set up drying rack — ensure branches won't touch
Set up temp/humidity monitor — you need to watch these daily
Dial in environment: 60-65°F / 55-62% RH / complete darkness
Airflow: gentle circulation — fan pointed at wall, NOT at buds
Carbon filter running if smell is a concern
2
Harvest & Hang
Chop day
Chop at the base or cut individual branches (your preference)
Wet trim or dry trim? Wet trim = cleaner look, dries faster. Dry trim = slower dry, better cure, more terps. Dry trim recommended.
If wet trimming: remove fan leaves and sugar leaves now while plant is fresh
If dry trimming: only remove large fan leaves, leave sugar leaves on
Hang branches upside down on lines — space them so air flows between
Bud wash first? If outdoor or pest issues, do H2O2 bud wash before hanging

💡 Dry trimming is almost always better. The extra leaf material slows drying, which preserves terpenes. Faster ≠ better when drying.

3
Days 1–3: Early Dry
Hands off — just monitor
Check temp & humidity 2x/day — adjust dehumidifier/humidifier as needed
DO NOT touch the buds — handling knocks off trichomes
Room should smell strong — that's normal. Chlorophyll is off-gassing.
If humidity drops below 50%: slow down — add wet towel or humidifier
If humidity above 70%: increase airflow and dehumidifier — mold risk

⚠️ If buds feel crispy on outside by day 3: it's drying too fast. Lower temp, raise humidity, reduce airflow immediately.

4
Days 4–7: Mid Dry
Starting to check progress
Outer leaves should feel dry but stems still bend without snapping
Small branches may start to snap — that's the sign you're getting close
Continue monitoring temp/humidity — stay in the 60°F / 58% range
Smell should be shifting from "fresh plant" to "herbal/floral" — good sign
5
Days 7–14: The Snap Test
How to know when it's done
Bend a small stem: Does it SNAP cleanly? → Ready to trim and jar
Bend a small stem: Does it BEND but not snap? → Not ready, wait 1-2 more days
Outer buds feel dry but not crumbly — slight give when squeezed
Larger stems may still bend — that's OK, moisture will equalize in jars

💡 Better to jar slightly early than too late. You can always dry more with the lid off. You can't add moisture back once it's gone.

6
Trim & Jar
Transition to cure
If dry trimming: trim sugar leaves now over a trim tray to catch kief
Remove buds from stems — leave a small nub for handling
Place buds loosely in mason jars — fill ¾ full, don't pack tight
Add Boveda 62% pack (optional but recommended) — maintains perfect humidity
Label each jar: strain name, harvest date, jar date
